Boarding House

Life in our boarding school is a unique experience — a place where individuality and community go hand in hand. Here, students build friendships that cross age groups, cultures and backgrounds, creating a vibrant and supportive social environment. Living with peers encourages independence, resilience and cooperation — qualities that help young people grow personally as well as academically.

Our boarders stay in comfortable single rooms equipped with their own private bathroom. The award-winning Upper and Lower Houses, where the rooms are located, offer modern and thoughtfully designed living spaces. Students also have access to quiet areas for relaxation, leisure facilities and welcoming common rooms for socialising.

Structured study periods and tailored academic support help students stay focused and achieve their best. Regular feedback and mentoring sessions encourage personal growth and guide each student step by step towards their individual goals.

A Second Home

Our primary goal is to guide students through their Gymnasium years to successfully earn the Swiss Matura, granting them direct access to university. Our dedicated boarding school team supports and encourages each student along this journey. Professional guidance and a wide range of opportunities for personal growth both in community life and in focused academic study, are built on a concept tailored specifically to the needs of young people.

Join our GKD Family

We offer the ideal environment for students with the potential to complete the Swiss Matura. Our boarding school is particularly suited for those who benefit from clear structures to support their learning, as well as for students who prefer an individual, self-directed approach to their studies.

Why Choose Our Boarding School

The boarding program at Gymnasium & Internat Kloster Disentis offers significant added value in the personal development of young people.

Life within a close-knit community fosters social skills and strengthens the ability to interact positively with others. Supervised study periods provide stability and structure, helping students develop essential self-organization skills.

These abilities are increasingly vital for success—not only during higher education but also in professional life—and often make the decisive difference in whether a task or responsibility can be carried out successfully.

Our boarding students receive individual guidance and support from our dedicated boarding school staff on site.
In the event of illness or health concerns, the monastery’s in-house infirmary—staffed by highly trained nursing professionals—is available to provide expert care and advice.

Together, we support our students in developing a wide range of learning strategies for a successful academic life. The prefect team supervises them in our study halls, providing structure and guidance. Once students have established effective independent study habits, they may also work in other rooms or in their own dormitories.

For students in the 1st to 3rd grades of Gymnasium, as well as new arrivals, we recommend planning at least 1.5 to 2.5 hours of study time per day.

On weekdays, the daily schedule is structured around study periods, school lessons, and mealtimes, providing students with a clear framework. Of course, there is still plenty of time for leisure activities, ensuring a healthy balance between work and relaxation.

Lights Out

Our boarding school is open every day, allowing international students to stay on weekends as well. This means more time for both study and leisure. Active and adventurous students can enjoy a wide variety of opportunities like climbing, mountain biking, tennis, toboggan track and much more.

In winter, the snow-covered slopes invite skiing and snowboarding. The Surselva region offers several ski areas, each with its own unique charm. Right here in Disentis, attractive high-alpine slopes await, while in the neighbouring village of Sedrun you’ll find access to Central Switzerland’s largest winter paradise—the Ski Arena.

The Surselva is one of Switzerland’s most attractive leisure regions and a true insider tip for outdoor sports enthusiasts. And in Disentis, we say: Sun instead of fog. Thanks to the southern weather influence, our community enjoys many hours of sunshine and a mild climate.

Highlights

Weekend Excursions
Two to three times a year, the boarding school team organizes community weekends with exciting trips to some of Switzerland’s most beautiful destinations. Alongside plenty of fun, participants experience the joy of living together and discover countless attractions.

Autumn Hut Evenings
In autumn, “hut evenings” are a cherished tradition. Surrounded by nature and far from everyday stress, these evenings focus on warmth, relaxation, and togetherness. It’s a time to recharge and gain new perspectives in the quiet of the mountains.

St. Nicholas Evening
Before Christmas, our “Klausabend” is a must. Good food and lively entertainment make for an unforgettable festive gathering.

Summer Football Tournaments
In the warmer months, football tournaments take place on our natural grass sports field. Teams compete in spirited matches, rewarded not only by their efforts but also by the breathtaking views of the Surselva mountains.

Barbecues & School Festivals
Grilling together on the historic Lindenplatz—just behind the impressive monastery church—is another highlight. And, of course, our two annual school festivals bring the entire community together in celebration.
