Music and the arts bring people together — and for us, nurturing them is an essential part of our heritage. The school choir, with its performances and concerts, is widely known and is one of the great strengths of our school.
The choir of the GKD Disentis, with around 100 singers, is one of the most renowned school choirs in Switzerland. A few years ago, it was honoured with the prestigious Lily Waeckerlin Prize.
In addition to our choir tour, which includes performances in Disentis and Chur, an important part of the choir’s mission is the musical enrichment of church services and celebrations.
Rehearsals take place once a week during lunchtime. Music is further supported through our specialised music programme, which offers students additional opportunities for musical development.

The monastery, with its countless artistic treasures spanning 1,400 years and its impressive Baroque-era architecture, is a source of inspiration in itself. The school is also closely connected to the Surselva region — the “valley of a thousand artists” — whose creators have long maintained strong ties to both the monastery and the school. Among them are figures such as Alois Carigiet, Gieri Spescha, Mathias Spescha, Linus Flepp, as well as architects such as Valerio Olgiati, Peter Zumthor, Werner Schmid and Gion A. Caminada.
The subject Visual Arts is based on studying key visual disciplines such as drawing, painting, architecture, and sculpture. In practical lessons, students work with a wide range of traditional and contemporary media. The theoretical component is an exploratory journey in which students take an active role.
Every two years, near the end of the summer semester, we host the interclass challenge— a full day of friendly competition centred around skill, subject knowledge, general knowledge, musical and dance performances, and quiz challenges. A distinguished jury evaluates all performances. The winning classes receive a prize and carry the title of Interclass Challenge Champions for the following two years.
